In an Instagram post following the Tuesday night debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Harris. Referring to herself as a “childless cat lady,” Swift urged her fans to “do your research” and determine which issues are most important to them in the upcoming election.
“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” she wrote. “If you haven’t already, now is a great time to dig into the issues and the candidates’ positions on topics that matter to you. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and vision for the country.”
Swift also addressed concerns about a recent deepfake of her falsely endorsing Trump that appeared online. “This AI video of ‘me’ endorsing Trump sparked my fears about the dangers of misinformation. It made me realize the importance of being transparent about my actual plans for this election,” she explained. “The best way to counter misinformation is with the truth.”
Swift then officially announced her support for Harris, saying, “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the causes I believe in. I think she’s a steady-handed leader, and I believe this country will achieve much more with calm leadership instead of chaos. I was especially impressed by her choice of running mate @timwalz, who has been a long-time advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body.”
In her concluding message, Swift reminded her fans, particularly first-time voters, about the importance of registering and voting early. “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. The choice is yours to make, but be sure you’re registered. I’ll link to voter registration and early voting info in my story,” she wrote.
She signed off the post with “With love and hope, Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.”
