Sean “Diddy” Combs has been moved to a section of the New York City jail where cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried is also being held, according to NBC News.
The special area of the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn is reserved for detainees needing extra protection, said three sources familiar with the situation. Combs, 54, was arrested last week and is currently being held at MDC, a federal facility notorious for poor conditions and violence.
Bankman-Fried, 32, convicted for orchestrating one of the largest financial frauds in history involving over $8 billion, is also housed in the same unit. This section of the jail is described as a barracks-style area with 18 to 20 inmates, many of whom require special protection due to their high-profile status or cooperation with authorities. While it is considered general population, the unit features heightened security measures.
A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons stated, “For privacy, safety, and security reasons, the [FBOP] does not provide information about conditions of confinement, including housing assignments or internal security practices for any particular incarcerated individual.”
Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March after being convicted of misusing billions from his cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, and defrauding investors and lenders. Despite his conviction, he remains at MDC while appealing, in part to maintain access to his legal team.
Combs, meanwhile, was taken into custody last week following a federal indictment accusing him of racketeering, sex trafficking, and other charges related to the alleged sexual abuse of women. Although Combs has pleaded not guilty and has not been convicted, a federal judge ordered on September 17 that he remain in jail while awaiting trial.
