NYC police commissioner to resign after FBI searches his home

New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban announced his resignation on Thursday following an FBI probe that included searches of homes belonging to individuals connected to Mayor Eric Adams.

Caban cited the growing controversy surrounding recent developments as a “distraction” to the NYPD’s work in an internal email obtained by the New York Post.

“I am unwilling to let my attention be on anything other than our important work or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD,” Caban wrote. “I have immense respect and gratitude for the brave officers who serve this department, and the NYPD deserves someone who can solely focus on protecting and serving New York City. For the good of this city and this department, I have made the difficult decision to resign as Police Commissioner.”

The FBI had seized Caban’s phone during a search of his home last week, along with conducting several searches of other officials close to Mayor Adams. According to the Post, Caban is expected to officially submit his resignation letter on Thursday, with the resignation taking effect on Friday.

Rumors of Caban’s impending resignation had been circulating, despite Mayor Adams denying those claims earlier in the week. In his official statement to the Post, Caban reiterated his reasons for stepping down:

“After 30 years of service to this city, I believe it is in the best interest of the Department that I resign as Commissioner. I have immense respect for the officers of the NYPD and must prioritize their interests above my own.”

Caban added that he believes in the importance of leaders who act with integrity and promised to “continue to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.”
