Mike Johnson to Bring Spending Bill With SAVE Act to Vote on House Floor

House Speaker Mike Johnson plans to hold a vote on Wednesday for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, paired with a stopgap spending measure. This vote was delayed last week due to opposition from some GOP lawmakers but is now moving forward.

On Tuesday, Johnson emphasized the urgency of both funding the government and securing elections, stating, “Congress has an immediate obligation to do two things: responsibly fund the federal government and ensure the security of our elections.”

He called on his colleagues to support the bill, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. “We will move forward on Wednesday with a vote on the 6-month CR with the SAVE Act attached. I urge all of my colleagues to do what the overwhelming majority of the people of this country rightfully demand and deserve — prevent non-American citizens from voting in American elections.”

The bill’s previous delay came from insufficient GOP support. However, Johnson’s decision to push forward came after a meeting with Donald Trump over the weekend. Trump has been a vocal advocate for including the SAVE Act in the spending package, reiterating on Truth Social that Republicans should not approve a continuing resolution without election security assurances.

If passed in the House, the package faces significant challenges in the Democrat-controlled Senate. The White House and Democratic leaders have expressed opposition to the measure.
