A day after the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed frustration during an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow over the media’s failure to maintain a consistent narrative about the dangers Trump poses.
On Monday night, Maddow asked Clinton if she had any advice for the media regarding Trump’s ability to dominate the news cycle through his offensive behavior. Clinton responded by criticizing the media’s approach to covering Trump, describing him as a “demagogue” and a danger to both the U.S. and the world.
Clinton added, “I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for the press to maintain a consistent narrative about how dangerous Trump is.” She referenced the late journalist Harry Evans, saying reporters should focus on “the object” — in this case, Trump and his threats to democracy.
Earlier that day, MSNBC questioned whether Trump’s campaign would call for de-escalating violent rhetoric, despite the suspect in the latest assassination attempt, Ryan Wesley Routh, being identified as a Democrat. Routh had reportedly donated to ActBlue and was involved in efforts to recruit foreign fighters for Ukraine.
On Sunday, Routh managed to get onto the golf course where Trump was playing and was spotted with a weapon less than 400 yards from the former president. Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a rifle barrel through a fence. Routh fled the scene but was later apprehended by police.
In response to the incident, the Trump campaign released a lengthy list of violent rhetoric from Democrats against Trump. The Trump War Room posted on X, stating, “Democrats’ rhetoric inspired another attempt on President Trump’s life.” The list of quotes was extensive, underscoring their claim that inflammatory language from the left is fueling violence against the former president.
