Harvey Weinstein indicted on new sex crime charges in New York

Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been indicted on additional sex crime charges, just days after undergoing emergency heart surgery. The new indictment, which remains sealed until his arraignment on September 18, adds to the legal woes of the disgraced mogul.

Weinstein was not present at Thursday’s hearing, as he is recovering from surgery at a Manhattan hospital where doctors removed fluid from his heart and lungs. According to the Daily Mail, prosecutors have been investigating three more allegations against Weinstein, which date back to the mid-2000s. These allegations include sexual assaults at the Tribeca Grand Hotel and a residential building in Lower Manhattan between late 2005 and mid-2006, as well as an assault at another Tribeca hotel in May 2016. It remains unclear whether the new indictment involves these specific allegations.

Weinstein’s original 2020 conviction on rape and sexual assault charges was overturned in early 2024, with the Court of Appeals ruling that the trial judge had wrongly permitted testimony from women not directly involved in the case.

During the Thursday hearing, a judge ruled that Weinstein could remain at Bellevue Hospital while recovering, rather than being transferred back to Rikers Island. Prosecutors aim to combine the new charges with those already filed, seeking to try them together. Weinstein’s legal team opposes this, arguing that prosecutors are attempting to bolster their weakened case following the overturned conviction.
