GOP nominee Donald Trump has released a statement following gunshots fired at his golf course while he was playing a round in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Secret Service reportedly opened fire after spotting a man with a gun pointing from outside the golf course. In a post, Trump assured the public that he was “safe and well” after the incident.
“There were gunshots in my vicinity,” Trump said. “But before rumors get out of hand, I want you to hear it from me: I AM SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! Thank you for your support. Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again. May God bless you.”
The man, reportedly seen near the property line of the golf course, was taken into custody after the Secret Service fired four to five shots after spotting him. According to Florida State Rep. John Snyder, the suspect, described as a white male in his 60s, retreated before being detained. NOT CONFIRMED.
This incident follows an assassination attempt on Trump in July during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. In that attack, Trump was shot in the ear, and several others in the audience were injured by gunfire from Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Among those shot at the rally were Corey Comperatore, who died protecting his family, and David Dutch and James Copenhaver, both critically injured but ultimately recovering.
