On Wednesday, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which was included in a broader government funding package, was rejected by the House in a 202-220 vote.
The defeat comes amid ongoing national concerns about illegal immigration, border security, and voter fraud.
The SAVE Act, supported by House Speaker Mike Johnson and former President Donald Trump, aimed to ensure that only U.S. citizens could vote by requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration.
Despite backing from prominent figures, the combined package failed to gain enough support to pass.
A total of 14 Republicans joined 206 Democrats in voting against the bill, contributing to its defeat.
