On Thursday evening, GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump announced that, if re-elected, his administration would require companies receiving federal housing subsidies to verify the citizenship or residency status of individuals seeking to rent housing.
“When I return to the White House, we will require all companies receiving federal housing subsidies to verify citizenship,” Trump stated. “We’re going to ensure legal residency, and as a condition of rental agreements, they’re going to have to verify it. Taxpayers will not subsidize apartment rentals for illegal aliens, and we will not allow illegals to drive up costs for Americans in need.”
This announcement comes amid ongoing concerns about illegal immigration under the Biden-Harris administration, which has seen record-high numbers of border crossings. Although the number of monthly encounters has recently decreased, the 2024 fiscal year could exceed 2 million encounters at the southern border. As of July, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol reported 1.92 million encounters, with over 8.5 million illegal crossings recorded since the beginning of fiscal year 2021 in October 2020.
During the same speech, Trump also pledged to eliminate taxes on overtime pay, emphasizing the need to support hardworking Americans. “As part of our additional tax cuts, we will end taxes on overtime,” Trump said. “The people who work overtime are some of the hardest-working citizens, and for too long, no one in Washington has been looking out for them.”
Trump has also promised to remove taxes on tips, a policy later adopted by the Kamala Harris campaign as well.
